Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check
In June, all Year 4 pupils will take part in the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) — a statutory assessment designed to determine how fluently children can recall their times tables up to 12. Fluency in multiplication is essential for success in later mathematical learning.
What is the check?
The MTC is an online test consisting of 25 questions. Children have a chance to answer 3 practice questions before beginning the real check. Each question allows 6 seconds for a response, and the entire check takes no longer than 5 minutes.
Support for All Pupils at Otterburn
At Otterburn Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils can access the Multiplication Tables Check with confidence. The check is designed to be inclusive and accessible for everyone. If your child has special educational needs or speaks English as an additional language, we will ensure that the right support arrangements are in place. If you have any concerns about your child taking part in the check, please don’t hesitate to speak to their class teacher — we are here to help.
Preparing at Home
There’s no need for any special preparation at home beyond regular times tables practice, which we already encourage as part of daily learning. In school, pupils will have access to a ‘try it out’ area in the run-up to the check. This will allow them to get used to the format and help them feel confident and comfortable when it’s time to complete the assessment.
Results and Feedback
There is no pass or fail in the Multiplication Tables Check. We will receive each pupil’s results to help us identify those who may need further support with their times tables. We will share your child’s individual score with you and discuss any next steps, if needed.
If you would like more information, please speak to your child’s teacher or visit www.gov.uk/STA.
