British Values at Otterburn Primary School and Nursery
At Otterburn Primary School and Nursery, British Values are not taught in isolation – they are woven through everything we do. They sit alongside our own school values of Respect, Courage, Responsibility, Resilience, Communication, Diversity, Democracy, Emotions, Aspirations and Collaboration and underpin our commitment to developing happy, confident and responsible citizens.
We actively promote the Fundamental British Values of:
-
Democracy
Children have a voice in our school. Through the Pupil Parliament, School Council and Playground Squad pupils contribute ideas, make decisions and influence change. They take part in votes, discussions and charters which help them understand that their opinions matter and that everyone’s voice should be heard. -
The Rule of Law
Our pupils understand the importance of rules for keeping everyone safe and happy. Through our Ready, Respectful, Safe expectations and class and playground charters children learn to take responsibility for their actions and to reflect on how their choices affect others. The Reflect 5 restorative process helps pupils understand fairness, justice and accountability. -
Individual Liberty
We encourage children to make positive choices, express their views and develop independence within a safe and supportive environment. The Zones of Regulation framework helps children recognise and manage their emotions, empowering them to make informed decisions and to take ownership of their behaviour and wellbeing. -
Mutual Respect
Respect is at the heart of our behaviour policy and our daily school life. Staff model respectful behaviour in all interactions and pupils learn to value and appreciate each other’s differences. Our Blossoms and Leaves system celebrates kindness, positive choices and the small acts that make a big difference to our school community. -
Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
We promote understanding, empathy and inclusion through our curriculum, assemblies and celebrations of festivals and cultural events. Children learn about different faiths, beliefs and lifestyles and are encouraged to be curious, ask questions and appreciate diversity.
Through our curriculum, assemblies and everyday practice we help children to understand their rights and responsibilities as members of a diverse society. Our work is guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and reflects our ongoing journey as a Rights Respecting School.
We believe that by embedding these values together with our ethos of kindness, belonging and achievement our children will grow into thoughtful, respectful and active citizens ready to make a positive contribution to life in modern Britain.
